Chapter 1: Texas Hold Em

Basic Rules

In Texas Hold'em, the dealer deals two cards to each of the players involved face down and out of sight of your opponents; then the players take part in a poker round that then takes place at the table. In the first round of texas hold 'em, competitors have a number of options; they can either 'call' or 'raise' (which would in essence be placing a bet blind), or they must fold their hand, by placing their cards on the table. It is possible to raise up to four times during a normal poker round, with one exception: When only two players contest the pot there is no limit on the number of raises permitted.

Once the first round of betting has been completed, three cards named the flop are then placed in the centre of the poker table. They are placed in full view of all the players, face up.The players then face another round of betting where they have the option to raise, check, call or hold. On this and for every future betting round, players have the option to 'check' if no player has decided to bet on their turn. While hold'em may look like seven-card stud, it is a different game altogether.

Texas hold’em players form the best poker hand they can by using the communal cards that are located in the middle of the poker table. Together with the with two hidden cards that are theirs alone, it is harder for your opponent to draw out on you than is in a game like 7-card stud. For example, if you were dealt a pair of queens and your opponent held a pair of tens, the presence of a pair of fours among the communal cards gives each of you an advantage: you will have two pairs. But you still have the best hand. However, if one of those fours completed a straight for one of your opponents, the only competitor who would be at an advantage would be a competitor lucky enough to have another four in his hand.

The fourth card is then dealt. This is called the 'turn' .Another round of betting takes place. The 'river' is then dealt, which is the last fifth card of the betting round. This is then placed in the center of the table followed by the last round of betting. The most competitive five-card poker hand is then obtained, using any combination of your two unseen cards and the five cards placed in the centre of the table is the winner.

That's all there is to the play of the game. However, within this simplicity lies other elements such as control, strategy, bluff. There ar emany different factors and elements that come into play, and run alongside the basic rules of the game. This is why Texas Hold'em is the most popular form of poker in the world.
