Chapter 1: Poker Terms

The colorful quotations you hear in poker can be based on real events or just made up from long ago. Here is a list of some popular quotations along with our version of what a person really means when he uses the quote: Phrase Translation "I'd rather be lucky than good."  Of course, everyone wants to be lucky, and if you have good luck on your side then you probably dont have to be that good at the game of poker! The player who thinks this is the type of player who believes in lady luck and winning streaks; if the player is on a run of successive wins then they will continue to bet even on a hand which is not very competitive. These players are usually pushed out in the long run as it is skill which really separates the pros from the amateurs, and the winners from the losers.

Poker  Phrase Translation

These are not uncommon, and most poker players have a story to tell about this. "If you can't spot the fish at the poker table, then it's you." You have trouble reading players and players mentality at the table, and as a result you are losing.. "Hey Joe, bring us a live one." A cocky approach, this is said when a winning player wants to take the money off a fresh new player at the table.

"I'm down a little." - This is the tell tale sign that the player has lost a bomb at the table..

"Boy, he is a tight player." A player is very conservative with his hand and is not taking many risks.

"Read 'em and weep." A player who(thinks) he has a winning hand, and is usually holding an extremely competitive hand.

"Sheesh, things can't get any worse" - Dispair is what comes to mind here, a player has not had a winning hand for a while, and is prone to take on a bet wher he or she may not have the best hand possible. Sort of its all or nothing now mentality.

"Trust everyone, but cut Means trust no one, and cut the cards as the cards." This is good sign in order to stop any wrongdoings by players at the table.

"Any two will do." It is not difficult in Texas Hold'em to obtain a competitive hand, and it refers to the theory that actually, only two cards are capable of winning a hand at the table. It is used to justify and awful hand that has just been recived by a player. However, to be successful at poker, we need some good cards to be dealt to us in the first round.
